\u201cMy father was killed by a bull on the farm when I was just 16 years old. So, I ended up taking over the farm much sooner than expected,<\/em>\u201d says Timmy.<\/p>\n

While Timmy finished school, a farm manager was hired to take care of the farm in Castlecarra, Carnacon in Claremorris.<\/p>\n

In 1994, after a year in the Agricultural College in Mountbellew, Timmy took over the farm aged just 19.<\/p>\n

Since then, the farm has grown from having 45 cows to 260. The increase has resulted in Timmy having to rent land to accommodate the extra cows. He says that the Aurivo Farm Profitability Programme was a big help with the farm expansion.<\/p>\n

\u201cAurivo are always ready to help and we got great encouragement from them when we were expanding. It\u2019s a big decision to expand, so having that support really helps,<\/em>\u201d says Timmy.<\/p>\n

He now works on 182 hectares, half of which he rents, but as there was no available land nearby, his farm is split in two, with the second farm three miles away. For this reason, Timmy says teamwork plays a vital role in the farm\u2019s success.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have one full-time staff member and two part-timers. The team environment is great. We have a good plan every day, so we\u2019re well organised and everyone knows what they need to do, and it makes working between the two farms much easier.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

But it is still very much a family business and Timmy\u2019s wife, Collette, and their three young children are also involved at the weekends.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe kids and Collette come out when they have free time and I\u2019d like to keep the farm going in case the kids want to take over someday, but there\u2019s no pressure.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking of family, Timmy and his father have always supplied milk to Aurivo and have built up trust over the decades. \u201cWe\u2019ve only ever supplied to Aurivo. We\u2019ve been supplying milk since my father started the farm in the late 1970s and we\u2019ve always had a good working relationship with Aurivo.<\/em>\u201d
