Ian officially started farming in 1973 and David followed three years later after completing agricultural college and a three-month stint in dairy farming in Holland. Since then the farm has seen many changes.
“Ian and I worked alongside our parents for many years before we took over about 10 years ago. We’ve expanded the land a lot in recent years and, in 1977, we moved away from the beef enterprise to focus on dairy farming.”
Working on a 182-hectare farm and milking 240 cows requires an intense amount of hands-on work, but David and Ian have plenty of support. David’s wife, Linda and two of their four sons are involved in the day-to-day farm operation, while Ian’s wife, Hilary, and their son and daughter also lend a hand.
Despite the long hours, David and Ian love the business and intend to keep the farm going for many more generations.
“We think it’s important to do the small things well,” says David. “We focus on maintaining good hygiene, healthy cows and a good milking routine. All these essential elements help create a great end product and have helped us to run a successful farm for centuries.”
And the goal is to keep running a successful family farm for many more decades to come. “My sons Gareth and Paul are very involved in the farm, so hopefully one or both of them will start running the farm soon,” says David. But even when that happens David plans to stick around for quite sometime.
“I don’t see myself retiring, so I’d like to stay involved, but take on a less vital role.”
