And now, the hope is that David’s son Colin — who is sitting his Leaving Cert this year — will carry on that family tradition.
“I’ve been farming all my life. I grew up helping out on the farm. I did a bit of everything really, so I learnt all aspects of dairy farming and I developed a real interest in the area and the plan was always to take over from my father,” says David, who was named Aurivo Milk Supplier of the Year for 2016.
After sitting the then Inter Cert in the late 1970s, David went on to study agriculture in Multyfarnham, Westmeath and a few years later was ready to take over the farm.
When David’s father started out, he had around 40 cows, but the farm has continuously expanded over the years and now has 140 cows on a 104-hectare site.
“My brothers helped out with the farm over the years, but they weren’t as passionate about dairy as I was; I was happy to take over the family farm. And now my children and wife help out.”
David’s wife Kathleen grew up on a beef farm in Westmeath so is well used to the farming life. Their three sons and daughter also help out, with Colin the most passionate about dairy.
“Colin has a good interest in dairy, he loves getting involved and helping out before and after school. He’s talking about studying agriculture and he might take over the farm someday.”
But David isn’t thinking of handing over the reins just yet and plans to continue farming as long as he is able.
“I have a nice set up here on the farm. The house is connected to the yard, so there’s no travel involved and I usually go home for a spot of food and a sup of tea during the day. Then in the evenings, the lads play football and I like to play cards with a few friends around the village.”
